Armistice Day 2022

15th Nov 2022

On Friday the 11th of November 2022, staff and students in Abingdon & Witney College joined together to commemorate Armistice Day.

The College held services across three of its campuses, in Abingdon, Witney and Common Leys. The services were coordinated by the Public Services and Sports Department who, through conscientious planning, incorporated staff and student experiences into each ceremony.

The last post marked the beginning of a two-minute silence, before students concluded each service with several poems that resonated the sombre mood.

Attendees then joined senior staff members Jo Milson (Deputy Principal), Elizabeth Frost (Head of campus experience, Witney) and Coral Ward (Head of Land based industries, Common Leys Farm) in laying wreaths at their respective campuses. These wreaths were surrounded by crosses that had been laid by students and staff that bore the names of relatives who had been lost to war.

Prior to Armistice Day, Public Service and Sport students supported the British Legion poppy appeal by selling poppies and badges. Abingdon & Witney College would like to thank the volunteering students and staff members for contributing their time and care to our commemorations.

Kai Barnes, Head of Public & Professional Industries at Abingdon & Witney College, shared:

"I am immensely proud of the students and staff that participated in the ceremonies across the college, on what is, such an important day of remembrance. The commitment and dedication shown by all those involved in the planning and implementation of the events should not be underestimated and, they too, should be proud of their achievements. Lest we forget."
