Learn traditional upholstery techniques from an industry professional.

Are you sitting on something that is not only comfortable but that looks great as well? You should be. Furniture can become disposable, purely functional items that we have no emotional attachment to and that we dispose of and replace without too much consideration. More than ever we consume, throw away, repeat. It doesn't have to be that way. How much more enjoyment would you get out of a piece of furniture that you had invested time and thought into, chosen the colour of the frame, the fabric, the thickness of the padding, the finish? How much more satisfaction would you get out of knowing that your piece of furniture was carefully worked on with skilled hands to ensure you got exactly what you wanted? Your own unique piece that reflects you and your surroundings, something to love and treasure.

This course will provide you with the opportunity to learn about upholstery and re-upholstery through a combination of practical project work, group demonstration/discussion and individual tutoring. The sessions are informal and fun with the aim of giving everyone the confidence and ability to take on an upholstery project.

If you want to upcycle a characterful chair or restore an old traditional piece this course will provide you with the skills and confidence to do so. Bring a project to work on, a fixed seat chair, footstool, drop in seat(s) or a headboard are all good suggestions. This is a very practical course with a chance to work your way through a project from concept to completion.

Please note there will be no teaching session 26/10/2021

Abingdon and Witney College is subject to Ofsted regulation and is required to work with all its students to make sure they understand Government initiatives around Safeguarding, Prevent and Fundamental British Values. Information on these matters will be shared with you during your course.

You will also be asked to complete monitoring paperwork, which helps us to deliver course content to the highest quality.

Upholstery – Mixed ability B

There is always the next project! The aim of this course is to raise awareness and enable, to give you the confidence to take on another project. Start with a drop in seat? Why not try a fixed seat next? Done a fixed seat? Move on to a sprung seat. Maybe this course is the start of a new hobby, pastime or even a career change.
You will be required to bring a project to work on and a basic tool kit. This will be discussed in week one. Tools will be available to borrow from the tutor. No previous experience is necessary, and all abilities will be catered for and supported.

Courses can fill fast, so please enrol early to avoid disappointment. Decisions on whether a course is to run are made two weeks prior to the start date - an email will be sent to you should there be changes to your course or if it is cancelled. Please check your inbox leading up to your course, including the junk folders. For anyone without an email account, our Admissions team will phone you instead.

For the first week of the course you will need to bring a valid form of identification; this includes passport, driving licence, debit/credit card, Birth Certificate or National Insurance card.

Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2021 prior to starting the course.

Materials supplied by the Tutor include:
