If you want to pursue a career in the dance industry such as teacher, performer or choreographer then this is the course for you! You will cover all aspects of dance and enjoy a combination of practical and theoretical study.

The Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Performing & Production Arts qualifications are designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to access and progress to degree level study or employment in the performing arts. They provide an opportunity for those who have an interest in the dance and the performing arts to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating, demanding and provides a supportive transition from general to more specialised study.

At Abingdon & Witney College we are well-known for our professional productions at college and on tour, where students work collaboratively on stage and behind the scenes to stage ambitious showcases, musicals and concerts.

The team are all practitioners and work in the Performing Arts industry, as musicians, set designers, directors, dancers and actors, who draw on their wealth of experience and understanding of the industry to support individuals in their chosen career, focusing their ambition.

Within this course you will:
• Develop skills in the areas of Dance Technique, Performance Skills, Drama, Choreography and Dance History
• Organise and participate in a range of exciting performances, showcases and a Final Major Performance, which in the past has included Grease the Musical, The Life and Legally Blonde
• Undertake relevant work experience
• Have the chance to participate in masterclasses, industry and overseas trips
• Promote and market yourself for auditions
• Experience mock audition classes
• Explore the process leading to the performance, such as reflection and evaluation, collaboration in devising new work, fundamental aspects of choreography and basic improvisation skills
• Access broader performance and creative classes to support your development such as Singing, Drama, Nutrition, and Makeup
• Develop your English and maths skills to support your progression plans
• Develop the ability to accept criticism and work well under pressure
• Learn persistence and determination
• Develop research, pitch and presentation skills
• Engage with an audience
• Extend your physical skills such as movement, coordination, dexterity and grace
• Maintain physical fitness and endurance
• Undergo ensemble rehearsals and optional solo/duet content
• Have an opportunity to independently create a dance company and develop a performance to perform to a local community group

You will develop your skills in a range of technical styles including Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary and Commercial Dance. You will explore and develop technique, choreographing and performance skills through regular performances.

Level 3 Diploma (8 Units):
Unit 1. Principles of performance
Unit 2. Engaging with an audience
Unit 3. Introduction to professional practice
Unit 4. Critical and contextual awareness
Unit 5. Production skills and context
Unit 6. Performance skills and context
Unit 7. Preparation for specialist study
Unit 8. Collaborative performance project

Level 3 Extended Diploma (13 Units):
Unit 9. Developing performance and production skills
Unit 10. Preparing for progression
Unit 11. Exploration of specialist study and context
Unit 12 / 13. Final Major Performance
The course will develop many skills that you will be able to use in the world of work and can be a route towards a career in Theatre, Musical Theatre, Dance, Choreography, Fitness or Teaching. This does include backstage, technical and administrative jobs, in addition to performance. The course also qualifies you for entry to university, dance or drama school, and offers up to 168 UCAS points.

Possible careers include: Dancer, Choreographer, Dance Teacher, Performer, Cruise Ship Entertainer, Theatre Promoter, TV and Film.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 and above usually including maths and English Language
OR
Level 2 Diploma at Merit or above usually including GCSE maths and English Language.
AND
a successful interview and audition.
There is a course consumable fee of £70 payable at enrolment which covers studio consumables, performance kit and general resources. There is also a fee of £50 for induction / day trips payable via WisePay at the start of term. The total course cost is £120.

In addition to the main course fees there is also an optional residential trip to New York costing approx. £1,200 (cost given as guidance only).

Trips and visits may be offered as part of your programme of study but these will be optional and fees will be collected throughout the duration of the course. Details of cost will be provided during the enrolment process if not already above.
