The primary purpose of this unique course is to enable you to identify your strengths and aptitudes so that you can select and gain acceptance on to a specialist degree course suited to your needs and career plans. You will explore a whole range of approaches to Art and Design with specialist tutors in the large purpose-built arts building.

The course starts broadly and becomes more specialised as the year progresses. In the first term you will explore specialist areas including printmaking, 2D fine art, 3D design, graphics, illustration, sculpture, fashion, textiles, spatial design and photography. In the second term you will begin to consolidate your growing sense of direction through the selection of three specialist options. In the third term, you will devote your time entirely to an in-depth six-week project which will become a public exhibition.

The course also includes a series of lectures which seek to challenge and inform you about contemporary and historical issues and help you locate your own practical work within a broad cultural context. The Foundation year provides a crucial link between A Level and specialist degree courses. At the same time, it is a year of exciting challenges and new pathways which we believe you will find both refreshing and rewarding.

This course runs across four days with an additional independent study day to make up a five-day week. Most students have part-time jobs alongside this course, but we recommend no more than nine hours per week to be able to cope with the intensity of the programme.

There will be regular trips to galleries and museums around the country and visits by artists, designer and former students. Students will also visit the UCAS Design Your Future Excel Centre, London, as well as London Art Galleries. Two residential trips are integrated in to the year: an initial four-day visit in September followed by a week-long stay in February. Recent destinations have included Beijing & Shanghai, Berlin, Venice and Lisbon.

As we are affiliated with the University of the Arts London, our students have the opportunity to be selected to exhibit their final project at a prestigious venue in London during the summer. This provides a fantastic platform for them to meet industry professionals and grow their confidence.

The long established tradition of the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design is given a new lease of life by UAL Awarding Body to provide a fresh, flexible and challenging approach to this pivotal qualification. The units have been designed with open assessment criteria to encourage exploration, experimentation and risk taking. Learning through projects, assignments, presentations and group critiques will enable students to develop strong communication skills and support the transition from general to specialist art and design education

There are three key parts to this qualification which is awarded by University of the Arts London Awarding Body (UALab). These phases roughly equate to each term and as you move through each phase, you will continue to specialise.

Part 1 Learning Skills and Context (Level 3)
• Unit 1 Art & design research methods
• Unit 2 Art & design ideas development
• Unit 3 Art & design materials and methods
• Unit 4 Art & design evaluation and reflection

Part 2 Development and Progression (Level 3)
• Unit 5 Integrated art & design research ideas and methods
• Unit 6 Preparation for progression in art & design

Part 3 Proposal and Realisation (Level 4)
• Unit 7 Project proposal and realisation in art & design

Delivering the qualification through University of the Arts London provides prestige, excellent connections and professional development for our staff and students. Most importantly, we deliver this programme holistically so that students develop strong critical awareness and transferable skills, and UAL encourage this.
Students will usually go on to study an Art and Design based subject at undergraduate level. Past students have gone on to study at the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London, Central Saint Martins and Edinburgh College of Art.

This course is preparation for entry to BA and Foundation Degrees in Art, Design and Media. Most degree courses require students to have completed a Foundation Course.

It is important to note that University of the Arts London awarding body qualifications carry more UCAS tariff points than the similar BTEC Pearson/Edexcel Foundation Diploma qualification. For example, achieving a Merit in the BTEC qualification would give you 240 points, but achieving a Merit in the UAL Awarding Body qualification would award you 280 points. This, coupled with your previous UCAS points and an exciting portfolio of work, would help you get into your first choice University.
Minimum of 2 A Levels at grade C (or equivalent) or above (with one of these being an Art and Design related subject)
or Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art, Design or Media at Merit including GCSE English and maths at grade 4/C or above.

You will also be required to provide a written personal statement, a positive reference and to attend a formal interview with a portfolio of work.
Home/EU tuition fee is free for students aged 18. 19+ applicant loan amount £5,421.

A course consumables fee of £120.00 is payable upon enrolment which covers materials such as portfolio, paper, specialist materials for project work and print credits for the year. There is also a fee of £40.00 for induction / day trips which is payable via WisePay at the start of term. The total course fee is £160.00.

Students may find they want to purchase their own specific materials when working on individual projects.

Trips and visits may be offered as part of your programme of study but these will be optional and fees will be collected throughout the duration of the course. Details of cost will be provided during the enrolment process if not already above.

There are bursaries available to help you with other course cost, call 01235 216 298 for more information.

The 19+ full fee button displays the full fee that may apply, the rules on fee reduction are complicated and we would encourage you to talk to our Admissions staff on 01235 555 585 to discuss your options. Also see the Course Fees & Finance page under the Info Centre link at the top of the screen.
