This course is designed to extend all aspects of dress making and garment construction using a commercial pattern. To read more complex patterns and use a wider range of sewing techniques and use of machines and attachments. You will gain confidence and skills in a relaxed and friendly learning environment.
In order to avoid disappointment, it is advisable to enrol at least 2½ weeks prior to the course starting. We will confirm course information two weeks prior to the start date.
During the course you will build upon your existing skills and knowledge to produce either a skirt or dress that can be lined, alternatively a blouse, shirt or pair of trousers. For the very experienced sewer a semi-tailored lined jacket.
You will learn how to take body measurements and amend your pattern before producing a toile for fitting before making your garment.
1. Take body measurements accurately.2. How to choose paper patterns and buy suitable fabric.3. How to adjust patterns & fit a toile.4. How to follow pattern instructions, cut out & make a garment.5. Cover construction methods such as collars, inserting sleeves, waistbands, facings and zips.6. Cover simple pattern adaptations.7. Use & maintenance of the sewing machine.8. Identify fashion trends.
Do not buy any materials until your course is confirmed as running.
Sewing machines are provided but you are welcome to bring your own. Information about patterns, fabric and sewing equipment will be given at the first session.
Some items to bring with you:A4 Ring binder & 12 plastic sleevesA4 lined and plain paper, pen, pencil, ruler, rubber and calculator 1.5 metres of calico
Basic sewing equipment:Fabric, paper and embroidery scissors, colour-headed pins, hand sewing needles, tape measure, tailors chalk, marking pen.
Please note there will be no teaching sessions on: 04 & 11/04/23, 30/05/23.
There are vending machines available where hot/cold drinks and snacks can be purchased. There are watercoolers on site making it easy to refill your water bottle.Should the Campus car park be full, please use Marriotts Walk or Woodford Way Car Parks which are a few minutes’ walk away.Please report to Reception on arrival. A photo-id will be issued, for you to wear when you attend classes.
