This course covers all aspects of dressmaking and garment construction using commercial paper pattern. To improve your pattern reading, sewing skills and fitting techniques enabling you to make clothes successfully. You will sew garments of your choice in woven fabrics to produce pinafore dresses, skirts, shirts, shorts, partywear or costumes. You will gain confidence and skills in a relaxed and friendly learning environment
During the course you will learn about fabrics, cutting out, pattern placement and reading. Use established sewing techniques to produce a small range of exciting children’s garments.
1. Take body measurements accurately2. How to choose paper patterns and buy suitable fabric3. How to adjust patterns and fit a toile4. How to follow pattern instructions, cut out & make a garment5. Cover basic construction methods such as seams, zips & hems etc.6. Use of different types of trimmings7. Use and maintenance of the sewing machine
Do not buy any materials until your course is confirmed as running.
Sewing machines are provided but you may wish to bring your own A4 Ring binder & 12 plastic sleevesA4 lined & plain paper, pen, pencil, ruler, rubber and calculator. 1 metre of medium weight calico or cheap plain fabric for the toile
Basic sewing equipment:Fabric scissors, paper scissors’, embroidery scissors, colour-headed pins, hand sewing needles, tape measure, tailors chalk, marking pen and tacking thread.
Additional personal costs to learner (over and above the published fee):A pattern, 1 metre of medium weight calico and fabric for each garment plus sewing thread, buttons, interfacing etc. Off cuts of fabrics for samples.
Please note there will be no teaching sessions on 2/6/21.
