Spend a relaxing day learning some essential cake decorating skills at this one day workshop. You will learn how to turn your own cake into a colourful Christmas cake to amaze family and friends. If time allows there will be an additional project to create a Father Christmas cake topper. You will be expected to bring your own equipment and materials but some spares may be available to borrow from the tutor if learners have difficulty finding certain items.
The course will include:- • How to cover a cake with sugar paste icing. You will cover a fruit cake, sponge cake or a polystyrene cake dummy if preferred.• Using crimpers• Basic piping with royal icing• Using letter cutters and flower paste icing• Adding colour to icing• How to make Christmas roses, holly leaves and berries• How to model a Father Christmas cake topper
Do not buy any materials/ingrediants until your course is confirmed as running. You will need to bring the following ingredients:
• 300g of buttercream if covering a real cake (made with 100g butter, 200g icing sugar and tsp of vanilla essence)• 1kg of white ready to roll icing (Tesco’s own is fine or Renshaw’s regal icing)• Icing sugar• Food colouring sugar flair paste colours, Christmas Red, Christmas Green. Alternatively buy small packets of ready coloured ready to roll icing
• 7 inch round sponge cake in 2 halves (making a 3 inch deep cake when put together) or a 7 inch round fruit cake covered with marzipan or a 7 inch round polystyrene cake dummy• Cake board 10 inch round drum• A pastry brush (preferably plastic)• A large and a small rolling pin (plastic if possible)• A small sieve• A palate knife• A small table knife with a flat blade or small palette knife• A cake smoother• Piping bag and nozzles or piping syringe• A small unused paintbrush• Plastic pots with lids and a box to carry your cake home in• Cocktail sticks • 2 meters of 15mm wide satin ribbon in green or red• Holly cutters• A thin 6 inch round cake board• A set of alphabet cutters - FMM are a good make
You will also need to bring a packed tea
