The one-year, full-time Foundation Diploma in Life Sciences provides you with the necessary scientific and mathematical background required for degree-level study in science, with successful completion of the programme allowing for direct entry on to a wide range of three-year science degree programmes at Oxford Brookes.

This full-time Foundation course forms the first year of a four-year science degree with Oxford Brookes University within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and is taught at the Abingdon campus by Abingdon & Witney College staff. In addition to using the college facilities, you will also be fully enrolled as a student at Oxford Brookes University with full access to their facilities.

The percentage of students completing the course remains consistently around 80%, with less than 5% deciding not to progress onto year 1 of an Honours Degree programme at Oxford Brookes University.

This course is validated by Oxford Brookes University. Applications are made through UCAS – code C101.

You will study the equivalent of four modules each semester. Modules in biology, mathematics and chemistry are delivered over two semesters, the academic skills module is in the first semester and these skills are then applied further in the research project module during the second semester.
On successful completion of the Foundation stage you may choose to progress onto a range of single honours field including:

Animal Biology and Conservation - BSc (Hons)
Biological Sciences - BSc (Hons)
BSc Biological Sciences with three specialist degrees - BSc Biological Sciences (Genetics and Genomics), BSc Biological Sciences (Zoology), BSc Biological Sciences (Human Biosciences).
Biomedical Science - BSc (Hons)**
Environmental Sciences - BSc (Hons)
Human Biology - BSc (Hons)
Medical Science - BMedSc (Hons)
Nutrition - BSc (Hons)
Sport and Exercise Science - BSc (Hons)
Sports Science - BSc (Hons)
Equine Science – BSc (Hons)
Equine Science and Thoroughbred Management – BSc (Hons)

**Potential students should be aware that for Biomedical Science it is compulsory to get a minimum of 60% in all five foundation modules because it is a prescribed programme with no module choices and requires competence in all areas of the LSF programme. For entry onto other programmes the pass mark is 40% in all modules, allowing students a viable BSc programme, in which they can address their deficiencies and make module choices that best suit their interests and strengths.

The course team strongly recommend that you attend an Open Day at Oxford Brookes University to ensure that the progression route through the degrees available is likely to meet your areas of interest and to ensure you are aware of the career routes available to you.
You must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have completed 2 years post-16 study at A Level or equivalent. In addition, you must have 5 GCSEs (grades 9-4/A*-C) including English, Maths and a science subject (or equivalent).

English Language Requirements (for students whose first language is not English): IELTS 6.0 (with 6.0 in reading and writing, 5.5 in listening and speaking). All students must meet UK visa and immigration requirements. Further information can be found at https://www.brookes.ac.uk/students/isat/visas.
