This course is designed for those thinking of taking on farm livestock for the first time or who already have a smallholding but want to learn more. The course will be held at the Common Leys Farm Campus. You will take part in theory and practical sessions making full use of the livestock technology centre. You will be able to get hands on practice with restraint and husbandry techniques of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. The college also has a poultry section so if this is your area of interest then keeping hens can be incorporated into the course. The barn is fitted with modern farming technology and you will be given a demonstration as to how it can benefit farmers on a small and large scale. No experience or knowledge is needed but if you do already have your own smallholding and want some advice and guidance this course is perfect for you.

The course will cover the legal considerations along with practical guidance. Looking at the basics of keeping; pigs, goats, cattle, sheep and poultry, with a strong focus on animal welfare. The day will include a mixture of practical activities on the college farm as well as theory sessions. Land management will also be addressed. There will be a question and answer session to allow for those with particular interests to gain expert advice. You will leave us with a certificate of attendance and contacts for future advice and guidance.

Further qualifications in agriculture or animal management.
