Are you a new smallholder wanting to start breeding your own flock of sheep? Do you find the concept of lambing on your own scary?
This day course is designed to give an insight into safe and efficient lambing procedures and aims to equip learners with the practical skills and confidence to successfully lamb a small flock of ewes. The course is held at the Common Leys Farm Campus where you will be taught in the livestock technology centre. Along with theory sessions you will be able to work in the barn with the college ewes and lambs.

There will be a mix of classroom and practical hands on instruction. Content will include; planning for the breeding year and record keeping. Comparisons will be made between indoor and outdoor lambing methods. Ewe nutrition will be discussed. Different breeds and methods of lambing will be covered. You will be shown how to tag, tail dock and castrate. The day will conclude with a customised discussion and question and answer session with the farm staff.
