Evening Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Carpentry courses available.
Whether you are a beginner wanting to develop basic woodworking skills, or you’re an experienced learner wanting to expand your skill set, come and join us at our evening woodworking courses.
Our seven-week programmes will teach you how to confidently carry out some common maintenance tasks around the home, which could save calling out a carpenter!
You will follow one of our three tailored programmes which have been designed to suit each learner’s level; Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced.

I am not sure which course is right for me, what should I do?
Don’t worry, all three courses are run on the same evening at the same campus. Apply now and our team of experienced staff will ensure you’re put on the right programme for you.

Can I do all three levels?
Yes, we run each course level three times a year, so once you’ve completed one course, you will be able to move up to the next at the nearest start date.

Beginner Programme:
Week 1: Sawing techniques. To include introduction to tenon saw squares and measuring.
Week 2: Corner/tee Halving Joints. To include introduction to Marking gauges and chiselling techniques.
Week 3: Tee Halving & Bridle Joints. To include introduction to mortice gauges precision cutting, Trenching, and marking techniques.
Week 4: Bridle joint. To include introduction to mortice gauges precision cutting, Trenching, and marking techniques.
Week 5: Dovetail halving joint. To include introduction to marking and cutting techniques.
Week 6: Mortice and tenon joint. To include introduction to mortice chisel & chiselling techniques.
Week 7: Tool maintenance. To include introduction to sharpening of chisels and planes, and planning techniques.

Intermediate Programme:
Week 1: Mortice & Tenon Joint. To include a re-introduction to mortice chisel & chiselling techniques.
Week 2: Measuring all components, marking, squaring & gauging using traditional hand tools & methods
Week 3: Jointing Footstool top, using traditional hand tools and Domino biscuits.
Week 4: Cutting of tenons to top and mid rails by hand using traditional hand tools & methods
Week 5: Cutting of mortices to legs by hand using mortice chisels.
Week 6: Gluing and assembling of footstool using a variety of clamps.
Week 7: Clean & sand to finish, allowing you to complete the final decorative finish of your choice at home.

Advanced Programme:
Week 1: Overview of project/ product. Measuring all components, marking, squaring & gauging using traditional hand tools & methods.
Week 2: Cutting of tenons to top and mid rails by hand using traditional hand tools & methods.
Week 3: Shaping Console Tabletop, using a mix of traditional hand tools and power tools.
Week 4: Cutting of mortices to legs by hand using morticing machine.
Week 5: Console Table Gluing and assembling of footstool using a variety of clamps.
Week 6: Manufacturer of faux drawer fronts and decorative flutings and fitting.
Week 7: Clean & sand to finish, allowing you to complete the final decorative finish of your choice at home.

Progress onto our intermediate course
None, but you must wear steel toe capped footwear in the workshop
As part of your course we may organise trips to assist you with your learning. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate. Bursaries may also available to cover the cost of some trips.
