The Level 1 Work-Based Diploma is a one year full time course. It is the first step towards developing the knowledge and skills required to work in the equine industry. All aspects of basic horse care are covered throughout the year with a strong emphasis on practical sessions on the college yard supported by underpinning theory which are delivered by a variety of specialist equine staff working at the College.

During this course you will learn how to maintain health and safety in the workplace, groom and wash horses, feeding and watering horses, stable duties and horse handling. You will also learn how to fit and maintain horse tack and clothing, clean tack and horse clothing, learn how to put on and take off tack and rugs and start to understand how to ride horses on the flat.

Students will be studying towards a study programme that will include their main vocational qualification, skills in English and Maths, tutorials, enrichment and work experience. These are essential skills for employment. Students will usually attend College 4-5 days a week from 9.30-4.30pm.

The Level 1 Diploma in Horse Care is a one year, full time, college based course with a strong practical element where experience is gained at the College Equine Unit and nearby at equine enterprises. Students will complete a block of work experience, both at the equine unit and off site with local employers, during the year to continually develop their employability and general horse husbandry skills.

• Principles of feeding and watering horses
• Assist with feeding and watering horses
• Principles of washing and grooming horses under direction
• Groom and wash horses under direction
• Principles of cleaning the stable and yard
• Assist with cleaning the stable and yard
• Principles of putting on and taking off tack
• Assist with putting on and taking off tack
• Principles of cleaning tack and horse clothing
• Assist with cleaning tack and horse clothing
• Principles of putting on and taking off horse rugs
• Assist with putting on and taking off horse rugs
• Principles of leading and controlling a horse for inspection under direction
• Lead and control a horse for inspection under direction
• Principles of catching and moving horses under direction
• Catch and move horses under direction
Students who have successfully completed the Level 1 Diploma in Work-based Horse Care and achieved a Level 1 qualification in both English and Maths can progress onto a Level 2 Work-based Diploma in Horse Care or Level 2 Extended Certificate in Horse Care. Some students may choose to enter directly into employment.

Advice and information of career options and further education is available to all students within the college and students are encouraged to make use of these facilities.
GCSEs at grade D/3 - G/1 and attendance at the assessment day.
In addition to the main course fees given below there is an additional cost of £50 for uniform and £25 for trips. If you need to buy riding hat, boots and jodphurs you should budget for costs in the region of £100. You may be eligible for a bursary to help with these costs so please ask our admissions team. (Costs given are for guidance only.)

Trips and visits may be offered as part of your programme of study but these will be optional and fees will be collected throughout the duration of the course. Details of cost will be provided during the enrolment process if not already above.
