A career as a golf greenkeeper can take you all over the world. If you enjoy working outdoors then a greenkeeping apprenticeship could be the start of a fantastic career. Greenkeepers are responsible for the maintenance, care and overall appearance of a golf course. It is their job to maintain a good quality playing surface and ensure that the course offers a consistent challenge and enjoyable experience for golfers.

Apprentices will learn the knowledge and skills required to maintain greens, tees, fairways and areas of rough. Apprentices will learn how to prepare soil for growing grass, maintain grass and identify, grow and maintain plants. Training will also be provided in design and landscaping and in areas such as manual handling and basic first aid. At higher levels, apprentices will develop the supervisory and more specialist greenkeeping skills needed to succeed at this level.

Apprentices work towards the completion of the Greenkeepers Training Committee (GTC) Training Manual:

• Develop personal performance and maintain working relationships
• Monitor and maintain health and safety
• Use and maintain equipment and machines
• Prepare and operate a tractor with attachments
• Present and maintain turf playing surfaces for golf
• Renovate and repair sports surfaces
• Establish plants outdoors
• Prepare golf course for play

Apprentices will compile a personal statement/ portfolio, will prepare for a knowledge test and complete a practical assessment as part of the End Point Assessment.
Successful completion of this apprenticeship could lead to work-based study at a higher level or full-time permanent employment.
No formal entry requirements. Applicants are likely to have 4 GCSEs A*-D/9-3 or equivalent, and will need to be able to demonstrate the capability to achieve all elements of the apprenticeship during their programme, including working in a suitable job role.
Free to apprentices.

This appreticeship has an £6000 funding band. Smaller companies will need to make a small contribution, large companies could pay through the apprenticeship levy.
