This course deals with Shakespeare’s sources. We will look at Shakespeare’s plays roughly in chronological order, and for each play we will examine one or more texts that provided the main plot elements and other significant textual aspects. There is a languages component to this, since most of these sources are originally Italian, French or Latin. We will use a contemporary translation where it exists, or failing that a modern one. Learners who have a knowledge of the original language will be also invited to consult the original texts.
Over the 11 weeks of the course we will cover some of the Shakespeare canon. The arrangement will be more flexible than doing one play per week: in some cases, we will spend more than one week on the same play; in other cases (especially for the history plays) we will group together more than one play with the same sources. Course time will be divided equally between tutor-led exposition and learners’ activities and discussion. All learning will take place in class, but there will be scope for learners to pursue independent study if they wish to.Please note there will be no teaching sessions on 02/10/2019, 21/12/2019, 28/12/2019, 04/01/2020, 22/02/2020, 11/04/2020, 18/04/2020 and 30/05/2020
