This two-year, part-time course is designed to give a nationally recognised qualification covering a range of subjects to further progress engineering careers in electrical and electronic engineering fields.

The course will allow students to develop a range of skills, techniques and personal attributes essential for successful performance in the working place. Students will have the opportunity to hone and develop their skills in engineering through both theoretical and practical practices.

This programme intends to:

• provide an educational foundation for Electrical and Electronic careers in Engineering
• provide specialised studies directly relevant to individual vocations and professions
• provide flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for career development and as a basis for progression to graduate studies
• develop students’ ability in Engineering through effective use and combination of the knowledge and skills gained in different parts of the programme
• develop a range of skills, techniques and personal attributes essential for successful performance in the working place.

This course runs for one day per week and consists of lectures, seminars, project work, and directed activities to promote independent learning along with workshops and tutorials.

The course runs over three terms per year from September to July and students can expect to receive their course timetable during their induction week in September. Although the course is one day per week, there is a substantial amount of self-study required in order to be successful on this programme.

This course is validated by Pearson.

Student will study the following modules::

Year 1 modulus include:

• Analytical Methods
• Electrical and Electronic Principles
• Engineering Science
• Business Management Techniques

Year 2 modules include:

• Project Design, Implementation & Evaluation
• Engineering Design
• Materials Engineering
• Advanced Computer-aided Design Techniques

Students will also attend trade shows during their study, and in the past have visited the MACH show and the Sensor Instrumentation show at the NEC, Birmingham, as well as the Southern Manufacturing show at the Farnborough Innovation Centre.
The course is designed to equip you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current and future employment within Mechanical Engineering. Critical to this programme is the opportunity for learners to combine academic knowledge with real life engineering scenarios.

Using the subject-specific knowledge and transferable skills acquired on this course, you may choose to enter employment directly or pursue Higher Education. Successful achievement of this HNC allows you to progress on to study additional modules to achieve a Higher National Diploma.

Recent graduates have also achieved prosperous careers in research and development, design and management, and technical sales and production.
Entrants to the programme should normally meet the following entry requirements:

4 GCSEs including Maths or English at 4/C or above, plus one of the following.

• 1 A Level pass in either Maths or Physics (or closely related subject)
• BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. It would be advantageous if students have achieved a merit in the Further Maths unit.
• Any other qualification deemed equivalent.

An interview with the course tutor prior to acceptance on the course will also be necessary.

English Language Requirements (For students whose first language is not English): IELTS 6.0 (with 6.0 in reading and writing, 5.5 in listening and speaking). All students must meet UK visa and immigration requirements.

Whilst all textbooks are available in the College and University libraries and online, students may wish to purchase their own copies. Prices of core textbooks range from £15.00 - £55.00 (prices correct at time of publication).
