During your observational charcoal and mixed media course we will look at experimental mark making and layering of mixed media to explore textures and surface qualities as well as atmosphere and mood.
There will be exercises on using tone and observing the play of light across forms. We will have a variety of complimentary exercises such as negative space drawing and a simple introduction to perspective. We will look at simple composition design in still life and landscape.
Do not buy any materials until your course is confirmed as running.
Materials RequiredA box of willow charcoal, mixed sticks, (thick medium and thin), a stick/sticks of black conte, or charcoal pencils 2B, or 4B, white chalk pastel, a good rubber/eraser such as Windsor and Newton or Faber Castell, (not a plastic rubber as they smear). We will also use watercolour sometimes as a base to build on, so one or two tubes of basic watercolour and a basic nylon round brush. Drawing paper: a good heavy cartridge pad A3 or A2. Cartridge paper is slightly textured paper that has been prepared for drawing, it comes in weights 150gsm to 300gsm. Cheap paper is usually smooth and difficult to shade on, so heavy rough is best. Daler Rowney or Windsor and Newton, or similar. Note: We will only use charcoal and cartridge paper in the first week and learners may prefer to discuss other materials during the lesson before buying them.
In order to avoid disappointment, it is advisable to enrol at least 2 ½ weeks prior to the course starting. We will confirm course information two weeks prior to the start date.
Please note there will be no session on 02/06/2022
