This course continues on from Course A, QPXR613P Draw, Paint, Draw for Contemporary Painting. Students with experience can join without taking Course A. The tutor will be happy to answer any concerns or questions you have around this- please email OALCityEmail@abingdon-wtiney.ac.uk
The energy and freshness of initial exploratory drawings can be hard to maintain when moving into paint. This in-depth course aims to enable you to find ‘ways in’ to achieving an equivalent quality in your painting.
‘Ways in’ or strategies will be discussed and demonstrated to help you begin and move on especially at those sticking points when binning it seems the only option.
The course provides sequential structured sessions aiming to unpick some of the theory behind a good and interesting composition in colour. Using both drawing and painting media you will work on studies and activities useful for representative and more abstracted contemporary painting. The content will include demonstrations, exercises, activities and briefs. Importantly you will be supported to develop confidence in applying your learning to some personal project work.
You will begin to assess your own work and that of your peers through 1:1 discussion with the tutor and group critique. Learners are encouraged to share ideas and experiences throughout the course.
• Entry level - The course is for people with experience of drawing and painting who are up for a challenge!
• You are expected to bring your own materials. Painting demonstrations will be in acrylics. Oils, if water soluble and used with non-toxic thinners and cleaning products can be used. During the term you’ll need drawing tools and media (inks, pencils, rubbers, charcoal, graphite sticks etc), paints, brushes, palettes, water containers etc, a range of ‘tonal’ paper for collage, glue, scissors, as well as drawing and painting paper and board. You do not need to buy everything before the course starts. The tutor holds some items for you to try before you buy or to use if needed just occasionally.
• For the first session you will need large drawing paper, masking tape, both willow and compressed charcoal, a rubber, fixative, white chalk or conte, kitchen towel and a table covering.
Abingdon and Witney College is subject to Ofsted regulation and is required to work with all its students to make sure they understand Government initiatives around Safeguarding, Prevent and Fundamental British Values. Information on these matters will be shared with you during your course.
You will also be asked to complete monitoring paperwork, which helps us to deliver course content to the highest quality.
