This two-year part-time qualification gives learners the knowledge, skills and competencies to work as a therapeutic counsellor in an agency context. It is designed to lead to an employed or voluntary role in a counselling agency in both health care and non-medical settings.

This is professional, humanistic integrative training. Students will be introduced to a variety of theoretical approaches, including person-centred, Transactional Analysis and Transpersonal Perspectives. Certain units will be student-led, allowing participants the opportunity to focus on their own areas of interest.

Personal counselling – a minimum of 30 hours face-to-face personal therapy during the course.

Client work – a minimum of 100 hours formally-contracted counselling (one-to-one) with at least 5 different clients in an agency setting. Cancellations and non-attends do not count towards this total.

Supervision – candidates require clinical supervision for their agency client work. In addition, candidates require 30-50 hours group training supervision as part of the course.

Subject specialist lecturers will also be employed to deliver a certain area of expertise.

There are 7 mandatory units:
Unit 1 - Working ethically, safely and professionally as a counsellor.
Unit 2 - Working within a counselling relationship.
Unit 3 - Working with client diversity in counselling work.
Unit 4 - Working within a user-centred approach to counselling.
Unit 5 - Working with self-awareness in the counselling process.
Unit 6 - Working within a coherent framework of counselling theory and skills.
Unit 7 - Working self-reflectively as a counsellor.
Students can progress to Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling or Level 6 Diploma in Clinical Supervision. On completion of the course, once in clinical practice, counsellors can work towards accredited recognition by a professional body such as BACP or UKCP.
Must be 21 years of age or older. Qualifications already obtained must include the CPCAB Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies (or equivalent). An agency placement is also required in order to complete a minimum of 100 client hours which must be completed within the two year course duration.
