Spend a relaxing day learning some essential cake decorating skills at this one-day workshop. Discover how to turn a cake into a colourful dragon/dinosaur cake suitable for a child’s birthday. Learn how to cut a sponge cake into the shape of a fantasy dragon or dinosaur and how to cover an odd shaped cake with icing. You will discover how to use modelling tools to create detail such as scales, wings and facial expressions.
You will be expected to bring your own equipment and materials, but some spares may be available to borrow from the tutor if you have difficulty finding certain items.
The course will include:-
• Cutting and covering a cake to make the shape of a dragon/dinosaur• How to cover an odd-shaped sponge cake with sugar paste icing. You can opt to cover a sponge cake or fruit cake• Using crimpers, modelling tools to add texture and detail to icing• Adding colour to icing• How to make lettering from flower paste icing
You will be expected to bring the following equipment and materials with you (please do not purchase any materials until your course has been confirmed is running):
• 8 inch round sponge cake in two halves so that it makes a 3 inch deep cake when put together• 300g of buttercream (100g butter, 200g icing sugar with tsp vanilla essence) • 2 kg of white ready to roll icing – Tesco’s own is fine or Renshaw’s regal ice work well• Cake board 12" round drum• Pastry brush (preferably plastic)• A large and a small rolling pin (plastic if possible)• Small sieve or sugar shaker with icing sugar• Palette knife• Small table knife with a flat blade or a small palette knife• Sharp knife to cut your cake• Plastic cake smoother • Small unused paintbrush• Plastic pots with lids and a box to carry your cake to and from class• Cocktail sticks• 15mm wide satin ribbon in colour of choice, 2 metres• Food colouring sugar flair paste colours, Christmas Red, Egg Yellow, Christmas Green. Alternatively buy small packets of ready coloured ready to roll icing• Clean apron and tea towel• Set of alphabet cutters• Set of plastic modelling tools
Tea/Coffee are available to make, with a small charge. Please bring your lunch.In order to reduce the use of single-use plastic water bottles/cups, there is a watercooler on site making it easy to refill your water bottle.Free parking.
