This is a one year, Level 1 course designed to give you an excellent introduction to working in farming. The course will focus on developing your practical skills working with a range of farm animals. You will get hands on helping to lamb the college ewes and help with the daily care of production pigs, cattle and poultry. Additional enrichment activities will be undertaken that will develop your employability skills and you will attend trips and visits to relevant agriculture establishments.

You will be based at the Common Leys Farm campus where we have a range of livestock and agricultural machinery. You will get to see the new livestock technology centre fitted with up to date production farming equipment. You will get to assist with lambing our ewes and have the opportunity to assist with showing and selling of the college stock. You will also visit and have access to local farms, where you will see a range of different animal and crop husbandry methods. Students will be studying towards a study programme that will include their main vocational qualification, skills in English and Maths, tutorials, enrichment and work experience. These are essential skills for employment. Students will usually attend College 3-4 days a week from 9.30am - 4.30pm.

• Preparing to work in the land-based industries
• Carry out tractors operations
• Introduction to production livestock and breeds
• Assist with the care of animals
• Introduction to wildlife and conservation
On successful completion of the course you may be suitable for progressing to a Level 2 course.
GCSEs at grade D/3 - G/1 and attendance at the assessment day.
In addition to the main course fees given below there is an additional cost of £150 for kit / clothing and £50 for a course trip. (Costs are given for guidance only.)

Trips and visits may be offered as part of your programme of study but these will be optional and fees will be collected throughout the duration of the course. Details of cost will be provided during the enrolment process if not already above.
