The Steps Programme
A gentle introduction to study
The Steps Programme, which takes place here at the college, gives students a gentle introduction to programmes of study before moving, if appropriate, on to mainstream courses.
Step 1: SCORE
Level: Pre-entry
Supported Curriculum for Responsive Education (SCORE) is for students with the most profound and multiple learning difficulties, whose awareness of the world around them needs to be stimulated through multi-sensory experiences.

Step 2: GOAL
Level: Pre-entry
Guided Opportunities and Access to Learning (GOAL) is for students with severe learning difficulties, who may also have additional disabilities, who have some awareness of the world around them and need to learn to make choices and to communicate more effectively so that they have more control over the most immediate aspects of their lives and their environments.
Step 3: Towards independence
Level: Entry 1
Students for whom this course would be suitable are at a stage where they are able to develop a range of skills to enable them to become independent in a supportive environment. These skills include self-care skills, communication skills, numeracy relevant to daily living (including shopping), simple food and drink preparation and independent mobility within a safe environment without constant supervision. Students should be able to develop a degree of independence, physically or through communication or both.
Step 3: Skills for work
Level: Entry 1–2
A course designed for Adults 18+ who aim to achieve work-related qualifications to improve their chances of undertaking and managing open, supported or voluntary employment.

Step 4: Initial skills for work
Level: Entry 2–3
This course is suitable for students who are working towards and are
- already independent in a safe and supportive environment
- able to communicate eff ectively with familiar and unfamiliar people
- able to develop the ability and desire to become sufficiently independent and confident in the community for either paid or voluntary work to be a real option.
Step 5: Preparing for opportunities and progression
Level: Entry 3
This programme primarily concentrates on developing the individual needs of the learners. There will be core learning activities which include developing basic skills, personal/social development, independent living skills and a chance to sample a number of different vocational areas and work experience.
Step 6: Vocational choices programme
Level: Entry 3–Level 1
A one-year intensive programme, based on vocational tasters with embedded literacy and numeracy designed to enable young people who leave school with few or no GCSEs and who do not have the skills to succeed on a level 1 vocational programme.
Step 7: Vocational specific
Level: Level 1
A one-year intensive programme, with embedded literacy and numeracy designed to enable young people who leave school with few or GCSEs at D-G grade and who do not have the skills to succeed on a level 2 vocational programme, to gain the skills in order to progress on to level 2 courses depending upon individual sustainability.
