Course Overview

Work with clay using various techniques. This is suitable for beginners and those with some experience who would like to progress their design skills, qualities of making and decoration skills through further exploration.


Course Content

You will be able to design and make your own project using specialist tools and equipment. Complete beginners will work through a planned series of sessions designed for you to learn the basic techniques while making simple pieces. You will be able to discuss new ideas with a professional jeweller.

• further techniques of jewellery making.
• use of specialist tools and equipment.
There is a charge included in the fee for the use of tools and materials and their replacement. In addition please bring £10 in cash at the beginning of term to cover gas and other consumerable items such as saw blades. This should be given to the tutor at the first session in cash. You will need to buy your own silver. The tutor will discuss with you what you will need and how to do this at the first session. Abingdon and Witney College is subject to Ofsted visits and have a responsibility to ensure we meet/exceed their requirements. As a result of this you will find you will be expected to understand the government initiatives around Safeguarding, Prevent and Fundamental British Values as well as complete quality monitoring paperwork as part of the course.


Entry Requirements

Complete beginners and those with some experience are welcome. However the beginners will be given priority, initially, while they learn the basics. There are no entry requirements for this course.

Enrolment numbers to our courses are reviewed regularly. To avoid disappointment it is advised to enrol early. Course viability decisions are made two weeks prior to the course start date. Any course changes are communicated via email so please ensure you check your email accounts running up to the course start date.

On the first week of the course you will be required to bring along one form of identification. This could be a passport, driving licence, debit/credit card, Birth Certificate or National Insurance card.

Please Note: Students should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2018.


Learning Methods & Assessment

You will be taught through group demonstrations of skills and through 1 to 1 support and advice on how your work can be developed. You will be shown examples of jewellery that demonstrate how skills have been implemented. You will be encouraged to assess your own progress and will learn through discussion with the tutor and your peers. THere will be course paperwork to complete.

This is a non-accredited course, there is no formal qualification

Fee Information

The Specialist Consumable fee covers the buying, maintaining and replacement of specialist equipment such as electric drills and soldering tools and demonstration costs for the tutor. There is a cash fee of £10 payable to the tutor for consumable items such as gas, chemicals and saw blades. You are required to purchase your own silver. The tutor will advise you on this.

Trips and visits may be offered as part of your programme of study but these will be optional and fees will be collected throughout the duration of the course. Details of cost will be provided during the enrolment process if not already above.
