Course Overview

Learn the basics of hand built pottery technique through practical experience.


Course Content

Learn basic techniques of pottery including, pinch pots, slab work, coiling, decorative techniques and glazing and limited use of the wheel. You will need to bring an old apron and a notebook. Materials are included in the cost although if very large items are made there may be an extra cost. Refreshments are organised by the group so bring a small amount of money for tea or coffee if desired. Abingdon and Witney College is subject to Ofsted visits and have a responsibility to ensure we meet/exceed their requirements. As a result of this you will find you will be expected to understand the government initiatives around Safeguarding, Prevent and Fundamental British Values as well as complete quality monitoring paperwork as part of the course.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course.

Enrolment numbers to our courses are reviewed regularly. To avoid disappointment it is advised to enrol early. Course viability decisions are made two weeks prior to the course start date. Any course changes are communicated via email so please ensure you check your email accounts running up to the course start date.

On the first week of the course you will be required to bring along one form of identification. This could be a passport, driving licence, debit/credit card, Birth Certificate or National Insurance card.

Please Note: Students should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2018.


Learning Methods & Assessment

Assessment is informal. You will be encouraged to assess your own work and will be supported to make decisions as to process and to progress accordingly. Beginners will be able to use the basic techniques to make objects from their own design. Those with experience will be encouraged to improve the quality of their work and to try new techniques.

This a non accredited course so assessment is informal and will be a mix of Q and A, discussion with some simple record forms.


What Qualification Will I Receive?

This is a non-accredited course, there is no formal qualification

You will be able to use the knowledge and skills you have learnt to build on your experience in the next course or at a later date.


Fee Information

The Specialist Consumable fee covers the materials that you will use to make your pots, the clay, glazes for example. This is budgeted at £0.75 per hour.

Trips and visits may be offered as part of your programme of study but these will be optional and fees will be collected throughout the duration of the course. Details of cost will be provided during the enrolment process if not already above.
