Course Overview

Learn both traditional and modern upholstery techniques from an industry professional. If you want to upcycle a characterful chair or restore an old traditional piece this course will provide you with the skills and confidence to do so. Bring a project to work on, a fixed seat chair, footstool, drop in seat(s) or a headboard are all good suggestions. The course is spread over four Saturdays - Saturday 6th October, 20th October, 3rd November, 17th November 2018.


Course Content

Learn both traditional and modern upholstery techniques from an industry professional. If you want to upcycle a characterful chair or restore an old traditional piece this course will provide you with the skills and confidence to do so. Bring a project to work on, a fixed seat chair, footstool, drop in seat(s) or a headboard are all good suggestions. You will need to provide scissors, hammer, pliers, tack remover, tape measure, notebook. No storage is available.

Additional costs will depend on the chair and its difficulty but learners are responsible for the costs of the materials and the tools they require for their project. The tutor will hold materials for you to buy and advise you on further equipment to buy. If you wish to speak to the tutor before the course starts please contact the College and we will put you in touch. (Further equipment and materials will include such items as a web stretcher, magnetic hammer, wooden mallet, hessian, webbing, horsehair. calico and needles. You may like to browse the suppliers websites to get an idea of costs.)

For courses running over a day, lunch and drinks are not provided. Abingdon and Witney College is subject to Ofsted visits and have a responsibility to ensure we meet/exceed their requirements. As a result of this you will find you will be expected to understand the government initiatives around Safeguarding, Prevent and Fundamental British Values as well as complete quality monitoring paperwork as part of the course.
Please note that there will be no classes on the following dates 13/10/2018 and 27/10/2018.


Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. Learners with all levels of experience are welcome.

Enrolment numbers to our courses are reviewed regularly. To avoid disappointment it is advised to enrol early. Course viability decisions are made two weeks prior to the course start date. Any course changes are communicated via email so please ensure you check your email accounts running up to the course start date.

On the first week of the course you will be required to bring along one form of identification. This could be a passport, driving licence, debit/credit card, Birth Certificate or National Insurance card.

Please Note: Students should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2018.


Learning Methods & Assessment

You will learn by watching the tutor demonstrate and from others on the course as this is a mixed experience course. Much of the time will be spent on practical work, some of it by trial and error. You will take responsibility for your learning and you will be expected to discuss your progress with the tutor. Assessment is informal, through 1:1 discussion with your tutor and group discussion, Q&A. There will be some paperwork to complete.


What Qualification Will I Receive?

This is a non-accredited course, there is no formal qualification

You can move on to more difficult projects and improve your skills.


Fee Information

Equipment to bring is listed in the course content. All other equipment and material will be purchased from the tutor or you will be guided by the tutor as to what to buy. A list of suppliers is given so that you can judge the costs that you are likely to pay. Remember that upholstery is something that you can go onto do for many years, using the same tools. Once purchased they should last for along time.

Trips and visits may be offered as part of your programme of study but these will be optional and fees will be collected throughout the duration of the course. Details of cost will be provided during the enrolment process if not already above.
