Sewing - Dressmaking for improvers (Gosford Hill School)

Course Overview

This course covers all aspects of advanced dressmaking and garment construction using commercial paper patterns.

Course Content

During the course you will learn about cutting out to grain lines. Use established sewing techniques to produce a dress with sleeves or a collar that can be lined.

You will learn how to take body measurements and amend your pattern before producing a toile for fitting before making your dress.

1. Take body measurements accurately

2. How to choose paper patterns and buy fabric

3. How to adjust patterns and fit a toile.

4. How to follow pattern instructions, cut out and make a garment

5. Cover basic construction methods such as collars inserting sleeve and openings

6. Use and maintenance of the sewing machine

Information about patterns, fabric and sewing equipment will be given at the first session

Sewing machines are provided but please feel free to bring your own if you wish

A4 Ring binder & 12 plastic sleeves

A4 lined and plain paper, pen, pencil, ruler, rubber and calculator.

Sellotape and stapler (tutor can provide this)

Basic sewing equipment:

Fabric, paper and embroidery scissors, colour-headed pins, hand sewing needles, tape measure, tailors chalk, marking pen.

Additional costs (over and above the published fee):

A pattern, calico and fabric for each garment plus sewing thread, buttons, interfacing etc. Abingdon and Witney College is subject to Ofsted visits and have a responsibility to ensure we meet/exceed their requirements. As a result of this you will find you will be expected to understand the government initiatives around Safeguarding, Prevent and Fundamental British Values as well as complete quality monitoring paperwork as part of the course.

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for students with some knowledge or who have made a Tote bag and skirt and but want to improve their skills, knowledge and techniques. There are no entry requirements for this course.

Enrolment numbers to our courses are reviewed regularly. To avoid disappointment it is advised to enrol early. Course viability decisions are made two weeks prior to the course start date. Any course changes are communicated via email so please ensure you check your email accounts running up to the course start date.

On the first week of the course you will be required to bring along one form of identification. This could be a passport, driving licence, debit/credit card, Birth Certificate or National Insurance card.

Please Note: Students should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2018.

Skills I Will Develop

By the end of the course you will have the sewing skills and knowledge to produce a dress with a collar or sleeves.

Learning Methods & Assessment

As this is not accredited informal methods of assessment will be used.

For example: Observation/Demonstration, Self-assessment, Question & answer/reading, Practical exercises and 1:1 tutor support.

Learners make greater progress if they do some work during the week and have access to a sewing machine at home.
