Witney team win U19 Mixed Tag Rugby FE Shield!
Tag Rugby U19 Mixed Tournament at Stratfield Brake, Kidlington
On Wednesday 5th May, 14 Witney Sport students took part in the first U19 Mixed tag rugby tournament. There were 10 teams in 2 pools of 5 with each team playing each other once in quick fire 7 minute games. After 4 really closely fought games the Witney team ended up 3rd in the group, which sadly meant they didn’t qualify for the semi finals but the afternoon wasn’t over. There was a FE trophy to be won!
The Witney team played Henley College for the chance to be the first team to win the FE Mixed Tag Rugby Shield. Henley scored within the first minute but the Witney team came back to equalise before Henley went ahead again. There was about a minute left on the clock when the Witney team brought the match back on level terms which meant the next try wins. The majority of the next 2 minutes play took place in the Witney half but with some very good defending and encouraging tactics from John Gunter they turn the play around and eventually broke down the Henley defence to score the winning try.
The evening was finished with a well deserved BBQ and the presentation of the FE Shield. Well done to all the players!
