After graduating from the University of York in 1979 with a degree in Economics, Barry spent thirty years at Gallaher in various sales and marketing roles, becoming Marketing Director in 1994. Awarded ‘Marketer of the Year’ by The Sunday Telegraph in 2002 he went on to become UK Managing Director. In 2007 he became Global HR Director of Gallaher Group plc prior to the company’s acquisition by JTI.
He runs his own Management Consultancy business, providing bespoke, high level business planning and strategy development support to a range of clients, including Palmer & Harvey, the UK’s 5th largest private sector company. For six years he was a Non-Executive Director of Digital Marketing Group plc, an AIM-listed company providing a range of digital marketing and advertising solutions to many of the UK’s blue-chip companies.
He is Chairman of Taynton Parish Meeting, lives in West Oxfordshire and is married with 2 grown up sons. Currently studying for an OU degree, other passions include travel, music, sport (especially cricket) and local history.
Having been an Independent Governor since 2010, Barry was elected Chair of the Corporation from January 2017.
