Abingdon Eagles set to soar with new basketball hoops

Whether it’s students enjoying a game during their Enrichment break, students from the Sports course, or one of the many teams who hire it out, equipment in the College’s sports hall has over time become somewhat ‘well used’.

However, the installation of brand new basketball hoops has now completely changed the space, and it is not only benefiting the College. Abingdon Eagles (AEBC), a new local basketball club who were responsible for campaigning to get the needed funds for the revamp, will soon be a regular fixture on the campus grounds as they begin to train and prepare for the season ahead.

Officially opened by Rich Neal of Oxfordshire Sport and Physical Activity (OXSPA), the organisation who funded the hoops, 35 future Eagles stars celebrated the occasion by taking part in a practice session.

AEBC, formed in January 2017, is an all-inclusive club and plan to run teams both in National League and local leagues in the coming season. It also has links with wheelchair basketball and plan to host a walking basketball taster session in April.

Speaking about the installation, Jason Crowther, Chairman of AEBC said: “We are delighted with the generous grant from OXSPA. This will benefit everybody at the Club, especially as we have exciting plans to expand our activities into the next season. The new facilities will take our training up to the next level.”
